How To Volunteer

  • The Raise the Roof community is helping to build our 21st sponsored Habitat houses at 264 Russell Street in New Haven. Your hearts and hands will make a difference. Gather a group of colleagues, friends, or reserve a spot for yourself and meet new friends. Email us for help finding a date for you, your group or organization. No previous build experience is needed.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven works with care to maintain up-to-date health and safety protocols.

  • Register below to become a build volunteer. Once you’ve registered in the system, you can check the calendar for openings available to your group or to you as an individual. Build experience is not necessary. Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven’s construction supervisors will help you master the skills needed for the day and provide the tools, literally and figuratively, to help you build.

*For volunteer “action shots” to inspire you, check out the video of build volunteers from our most recent build at 33 Elliott Street.

If you are part of an interested group—work, church, school, civic, neighborhood— that is new to volunteering with us, please email us at contactus@raisetheroofct.org. On most Saturdays, groups of up to 10 people can be accommodated. Raise the Roof’s Volunteer Coordinator and team will help you designate a build coordinator within your group and select from among available build dates. While most groups choose a Saturday to work, weekdays can also be arranged. We look forward to building with you!

  • REGISTER AS A BUILD VOLUNTEER

  • All volunteers are asked to create a profile in Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven’s volunteer management system, VolunteerUp. This is where you will find important resources like the safety video and volunteer waivers, and it is where you will sign up for specific days and times to volunteer. You may also register to volunteer at the Habitat ReStore (read more about the ReStore below.) Read here about build site procedures for keeping everyone safe and healthy as we help families build homes.

    1. Click HERE to access the VolunteerUp system, which will open in a new page. If you have already registered with Habitat of Greater New Haven, enter your username and password in the appropriate box. If you are a new volunteer, click the Register button under “I am a New Volunteer.” Create a username and password for your profile and then enter your contact and emergency contact information. If you are part of a group or groups, or if you are joining with a particular group for a build day, please select the appropriate organizations. If you are not part of a group, you may select Raise the Roof. When you have completed the form, click the Register button.

    3. A box will pop up that directs you to the calendar. This is where you will see the current worksite availability. If you are part of a group and know your work date, you can go directly to the date or look for the group’s date on the calendar. If you are volunteering as an individual, you may sign up for any available spots listed under Individuals or Raise the Roof. When you click on the selected shift, an information page will open. Please review this page and print a copy of the volunteer waiver. At the top of the screen, click the box under “Select Shifts” next to your group’s name or next to “Individuals” if you are not affiliated with the group. Then click the SignUp button. For some dates, a group may have reserved all volunteer spots. In that case, there will not be openings for individuals.

You are now ready to volunteer! Remember to complete the volunteer waiver. This must be brought to the worksite or ReStore during your volunteer shift. The answers to these Frequently Asked Questions will also help to prepare you for your day of volunteering.

You can log back into VolunteerUp at any time to schedule additional days to volunteer.

If you have questions, please email contactus@raisetheroofct.org or contact Allison Mangles, Volunteer Coordinator, Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven, at amangles@habitatgnh.org or (203) 785-0794 ext. 110.

  • Habitat ReStore in Wallingford

Have a heart for shopping, Habitat, and helping? Have we got a deal for you! Volunteers at Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven’s ReStore have the opportunity to peruse treasures that include new and gently used furniture, appliances, kitchen cabinets, sinks, tools, lighting, and more, all while getting to meet other Restore volunteers, Habitat homeowners, and customers. Volunteers help with greeting and assisting customers and organizing and creating displays, and the ReStore proceeds support Habitat’s home building program in Greater New Haven.

The ReStore is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm and Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Volunteers may assist for the full day or half the day. High school and college students working on community service hours are welcome. Shoppers are welcome, too! For more information about volunteering, please contact Allison Mangles, Volunteer Coordinator, at (203) 785-0794 ext. 110 or
    amangles@habitatgnh.org.
